The Process
A tutor’s challenge
In an early tutorial at Goldsmiths, a tutor observed that I ‘apply words to work rather than make art of words’. I decided to see if I could meet this challenge and make an piece of words.
Workshops
An additional motivation for making ‘Sieved Poem’ was to explore the Goldsmiths’ workshops, to see what new methods and materials are available and what they help me to communicate.
I started in the metal workshop, bending and MIG welding the sieve’s handle. I also ventured into the casting workshop to make a dome mould (using plaster of Paris and scrim over a yoga ball) on to which I then silver soldered mild steel wire to form the basket of the sieve.
Poetry
The poem for this work was written by redacting material from the poetry pamphlet ‘Threads‘. After many drafts, I arrived at the 8 stanzas poem above. This was then laser cut in clear Perspex.
Due to time limitation on the laser cutter and the cost of Perspex sheets, only two stanzas have been made. If I exhibit this piece I will cut the rest so that there is a mound of letters in the sieve and a scattered heap on the floor underneath: the more letters the more possibilities!
